David Earls spent over twenty years in the insurance industry, holding a variety of positions including Director of Group Marketing at Fortis Benefits (then Mutual Benefit Life) and Vice President, Group Marketing, at Business Men's Assurance Company of America (BMA). David pioneered document automation in the early eighties at Fortis, when he and a colleague personally redesigned the company's policy issue system. The project led to an appointment to the Presidential Grace Commission, where David and other business leaders analyzed data collection processes at the Social Security Administration. At BMA, David introduced employee-specific enrollment communications to the company's worksite marketing initiative. Since leaving BMA in 1996, David has created a variety of personalized communications for employee benefits and direct mail. His work in designing materials for the digital press was featured in a 1998 IBM video. David is a graduate of Marietta College and holds a BA in English.
Mary Cantwell has spent over twenty years writing and consulting about employee benefits. As a communications consultant for William M. Mercer, she produced award-winning flexible benefit and retirement communications programs for major employers. As Director of Employee Communication and Education for J.P. Morgan/American Century Retirement Plan Services, she earned national recognition for her innovative 401(k) programs. Mary has won over a dozen awards for employee communications, including Telly finalist from the International Television Association (ITVA) and the Silver Quill award of excellence from the International Association of Business Communications (IABC). Her work has been cited in 401(k) News and Pensions & Investments. Mary is a graduate of Drake University, where she earned a BA and an MA in English.
